10.3.13 5 Questions with Ebony Rutherford of Trish’s Garage

Ebony Rutherford is the founder of Trish’s Garage and a recent graduate of TechTown’s Blocks Retail Boot Camp.

What’s your business?

Trish’s Garage is a fashion store where buying clothes and accessories is combined with a personal stylist. By providing affordable clothing, we cater to the college student transitioning from school to work, by providing affordable clothing. Trish’s Garage also provides styling tips through videos, workshops and visual looks to aid in the never-ending “What am I going to wear?” battle.

Why are you proud of it?

The first and most important step to developing style is to project the kind of confidence that tells others that you respect yourself, love yourself and dress up for yourself and nobody else. It’s truly rewarding to help women bring out their true style and personality with a Trish’s Garage style tune-up. I care about the inside so that it is expressed on the outside.

What local entrepreneur do you look up to and why?

One of the many local entrepreneurs I recently began to admire is Karen from Savvy Chic. With over 10 years of experience in retail, she has an energy that attracts you to come in, talk and laugh while shopping in her store located in Eastern Market.  I love the way her merchandise tells a story, and you truly want to create a story in your home as well. She has taught me valuable lessons in being a female entrepreneur and business owner that I hope to emulate with Trish’s Garage.

What’s your best advice for a fellow entrepreneur?

Don’t think, don’t try, just DO! The inner voice inside of you is always talking, even though we ignore it. As entrepreneurs, we overthink and underthink, and we end up doing nothing at all. Don’t let the fear of failure stop you from realizing your dreams! I speak from experience when I say that when one door closes, another bigger and brighter opportunity opens. Just open the door!

What do you do when you need a mental break?

I dance! My favorite song is Calvin Harris’ “Feel so Close.” I really love the lyric: “I feel so close to you right now, it’s a force field.” I really feel the energy from those words. The beat and cool melody makes me want to jump, laugh and dance. My mental break is about enjoying the moment right now. I feel so close to making all my dreams come true with my business. It’s like a force field!
