FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Detroit Sip celebrates grand opening in Bagley neighborhood Nov. 18
Coffee shop is first to serve UDM, Marygrove and northwest Detroit neighbors

Detroit Sip, northwest Detroit’s premier coffee shop, celebrates its grand opening in Detroit’s Bagley neighborhood on Saturday, November 18 from 11am-3pm. Located at 7420 West McNichols, Detroit Sip is the first coffee shop in recent years to serve University of Detroit, Marygrove and their neighbors. The shop offers a wide range of Detroit-based products for a variety of tastes, including Germack and Ashe Supply Co. coffee, Intu Tea and Dutch Girl Donuts.

Detroit Sip is the third vocation for enterprising owner Jevona Watson, a Bagley resident, who is also an attorney and the proud mother of two children. Over the last year, the coffee shop has gained a solid reputation as a gathering space for University of Detroit Mercy and Marygrove students and staff, as well as community members and organizations, as Watson opened her doors for meetings and gatherings.

“My dream started with a desire to give the college students a destination outside of the gates. That dream has evolved to so much more. I envision Detroit Sip as being a key reason that people will intentionally choose to live, work and play in northwest Detroit,” says Watson. “This is an investment not just in my business but in my community. I want Detroit Sip to be a reflection of the pride, tenacity and resiliency that being a Detroiter entails.”

Watson received support from several Detroit entrepreneurship and neighborhood development organizations, including SWOT City (a program of TechTown Detroit), Live6, Build Institute and Motor City Match.

“TechTown drives neighborhood development by helping businesses get open and stay open,” says Amy Rencher, director of TechTown’s SWOT City program. “Detroit Sip is the perfect example of the type of business we encourage—filling a gap while building community at the same time. And Jevona is the type of business owner we seek—willing to do the hard work and devoted to her neighbors and neighborhood.”

Detroit Sip’s grand opening will feature music and a raffle. The coffee shop will be open Thursdays 6am-6pm, Fridays 6am-7pm, Saturdays 8am-6pm and Sun 10am-6pm through December 2017, with expanded hours beginning in January 2018.
