Motown Musician Accelerator Director Announced, Artist Applications Due July 14

Four Bands or Artists to Be Selected for Intensive, 12-Week Program, $20,000 Grant

Detroit – Motown Musician Accelerator announced today Suai Kee will lead the program’s efforts as Director. Unveiled earlier this year, Motown Musician Accelerator is a grant and educational initiative made possible via a partnership by Motown Records, Motown Museum, Capitol Music Group, TechTown Detroit and gener8tor.

Kee’s deep roots in the Detroit music scene include being a respected singer/songwriter, gracing some of the city’s most acclaimed stages, and mentoring teens and adults pursuing careers in the recording and performing arts. Previously signed to Motown Records by music industry veteran Sylvia Rhone, Kee has toured nationally, opening for acts such as Solange and Detroit’s own Kem, and worked with powerhouse producers Linda Perry, Akon, and Dallas Austin to name a few.

“I am incredibly excited to be Motown Musician Accelerator’s inaugural Director,” Kee said. “This is a full circle moment for me, reconnecting with the Motown legacy. It’s a huge honor being trusted to mentor my city’s top talent. Giving deserving artists a career boost and elevating the Detroit music scene are my main priorities.”

“It’s difficult to capture my enthusiasm and excitement for what the Motown Accelerator program, with our great partners, brings to the great city of Detroit,” said Paul Riser, director of TechTown’s Detroit Urban Solutions, son of Funk Brother Paul Riser and trustee of Motown Museum. “The response from the region has been nothing short of amazing thus far, which creates immense anticipation for what’s in store – particularly the opportunity to collectively support Suai in her capacity as the first Director.”

The program is accepting applications through July 14 from Detroit-area musicians for its first intensive 12-week accelerator program. Each artist will be awarded a $20,000 grant to be used toward their career.

“This accelerator offers the artist-focused, results-oriented type of programming Detroit artists need,” said Kee. “The driving spirit of old Motown is still alive in the city and Detroit’s artists are ready to break out. Motown Musician Accelerator will provide the career support to help make that happen.”

Applications can be submitted at https://www.MotownMusicianAccelerator.com/apply. Details on the selection process and criteria can be found on the application page.

As an introduction to the Detroit music community, Motown Musician Accelerator will host a free mixer on July 6 for program sponsors and applicants. The program is also offering free quarterly public workshops on a variety of topics of interest to musicians, which will be posted throughout the year on www.MotownMusicianAccelerator.com/events.
