Medicina Urbana offers modern, holistic health care in Southwest Detroit

New business celebrates grand opening September 27, 5-8pm

A new small business will bring bilingual, modern, holistic primary health care to the Southwest Detroit community. Founded by Dr. Mark Beard, Medicina Urbana will offer osteopathic medicine techniques and standard medical care, combined to promote wellness. Medicina Urbana will celebrate with a grand opening on September 27 from 5-8pm, 5700 W. Vernor Hwy.

As an Osteopathic Physician, Dr. Beard diagnoses and treats patients with his hands, helping to resolve muscle and joint pain. This helps promote healing and improve overall mobility.

Dr. Beard has been working as a physician in underserved areas of Michigan since 2008 and has called Detroit home since 2012. His work was featured in Hour Magazine’s 2013 Top Doc issue.

Dr. Beard is proud to serve the Latino community as a bilingual practitioner in Southwest Detroit. He has formed community partnerships with Cristo Rey High School and La Sed Senior Center, where he holds office hours for those with limited mobility and/or transportation, in addition to doing free BP and blood sugar checks. Dr. Beard has also volunteered at the Ford Resource and Engagement Center at the Mexicantown Mercado, supporting their community health fairs.

“Good access to primary health care is a fundamental right,” says Dr. Beard.  “I am here both to treat patients and for the greater goal of strengthening the foundation of basic necessities for the residents of Southwest Detroit.”

Medicina Urbana received entrepreneurial support and technical assistance from ProsperUS Detroit and TechTown’s SWOT City program.

The Grand Opening will feature contributions from fellow Detroit small businesses, including a signature cocktail by Kevin Peterson, Calista Cocktail Scientist at Sfumato Fragrances in Midtown Detroit. The agave, herbal and citrus drink will be made with Cabresto Tequila. Vinnie Massimino of Portage Garage Sounds will perform a live DJ set.

Medicina Urbana is located at the corner of Vernor Highway and Campbell Street along one of Southwest Detroit’s most active corridors of culture and commerce. The business is open 10am-4pm Monday-Thursday and two Saturdays a month from 10am-3pm. To make an appointment, visit https://medicinaurbanadetroit.com/.
