June is Pride Month, a time for the world to celebrate the LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) community, culture and activism. It’s also a great time to support LGBTQ-owned small businesses and organizations in metro Detroit – like Motor City Pride, a TechTown tenant!
About Motor City Pride
Motor City Pride is a volunteer-driven organization and Michigan’s largest pride celebration. The organization is also a tenant at TechTown Detroit and has called 440 Burroughs home for six years. Dave Wait, Motor City Pride chairman, shared that one of the biggest perks of being a tenant at TechTown is the meeting space for planning and organizational meetings throughout the year.
Motor City Pride’s mission is to foster pride in and respect for the LGBTQ community, and they work to achieve this mission by organizing the annual Motor City Pride Festival and Parade and through various community events year-round.
This year the Motor City Pride Festival and Parade will take place June 11–12 at Hart Plaza in Detroit.
“The festival celebrates our community while advocating for full equality for all Michiganders,” said Wait. “The event will have a family area, four stages of entertainment and over 100 food, drink and shop vendors.”
Wait shared that the highlight of the weekend celebration will be at the parade that steps off on June 12 at Noon. “It will pay tribute to the first Detroit LGBTQ march that took place 50 years ago.”
“In addition to the celebrating and advocating that takes place at the festival, it is important to provide a safe space so people can be their authentic selves,” said Wait.
