Online local business directory and exclusive online store makes finding that perfect holiday gift easy and fun

DETROIT – Before loading up an online shopping cart from a big-box store or heading out to a national chain store, there is an easy and fun way to shop for a cause at a local business this year thanks to TechTown Detroit’s new online business directory TechTown Marketplace and online Limited Edition Store.

Whether searching for the perfect holiday gift, a new outfit, a bakery or perhaps a nearby spa, TechTown Marketplace can connect individuals to TechTown-supported businesses throughout Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park. Individuals looking for a particular business can explore TechTown Marketplace through keyword search, by neighborhood, such as Avenue of Fashion / University District, Corktown, Grand River/Northwest, or by category: books, technology, pet care, health and beauty.

The holiday shopping season is often a make-or-break time for small businesses, and shopping small has positive ripple effects throughout the local economy.

“When you buy local, you accelerate a more inclusive, equitable economy in Detroit and southeast Michigan, and it’s a way to really feel good about your purchase,” said Ned Staebler, president and CEO of TechTown Detroit. “Now when people ask us where to shop for gifts that support Detroit-based small businesses, we can direct them to the Marketplace to find both familiar names and hidden gems.”

TechTown is also removing barriers to access by connecting small businesses with people. In its second year, the Limited Edition Store features nine clients and alumni from women-owned Detroit-based businesses. Holiday shoppers can find unique gift ideas created through custom collaborations, and all purchases not only help the small business owner, but they also include a donation to TechTown so they can continue their mission of helping businesses develop, launch and grow.

Some of the local businesses and their offerings in the Limited Edition Store are:

  • Natural Market and CommodiTeas: These two local retailers have combined forces to create that perfect tea experience with the CommodiTeas Tea Portfolio that includes multiple blends that suit any palette, while relaxing with the soothing light of a handmade travel candle by Natural Market.
  • ILERA Apothecary: Holiday shoppers can enjoy a journey through the science and art of soap making. This fun and engaging soap making kit comes with all the tools needed and all are packaged in a sleek, giftable box with premium supplies.
  • Black Economic Exchange Group: Chocolate lovers rejoice! Black Economic Exchange Group offers a gift basket filled with a festive holiday mug and hot cocoa kit, along with premium chocolates and tied with a festive bow.

The last day to purchase items to be shipped from the Limited Edition Store is Dec. 13, and the last day for pickup is Dec. 17. All TechTown Limited Edition Store items are final sale.

“Every dollar individuals spend with a local business goes further and has more impact,” Staebler continued. “Shopping with local businesses creates jobs in our communities, keeps your dollars in the local economy and lessens your carbon footprint.”
