To be eligible for a small business support hub grant:
- Clients/business must be enrolled in a Hub partner program in the last 6 months.
- Hub partners are: BUILD Institute, Eastern Market Partnership, Michigan Small Business Development Center, ProsperUs Detroit and TechTown Detroit
- The business must be a for-profit Michigan company with less than 500 employees and demonstrate a disproportionate impact from the COVID-19 pandemic:
- Minority, woman, disabled, or veteran-owned business
- Or exists in a qualifying rural district approved by the State of Michigan
- The grant must be used for business-related expenses and is subject to exclusions, and terms and conditions. (See FAQ)
- The business can only receive one MEDC Small Business Hub Grant.

When will I know if my grant application is accepted?
The grant application review process typically is 14 days, but may take up to 30 days depending on the information provided. You will receive an email within 30 days of submitting the application if your application was approved or denied
What do I do if my grant application is denied?
TechTown and its affiliated partners will have already been partnering with you before receiving the link to apply for the grant and guiding you through the process. However, an application may be denied for a variety of reasons – missing information, use of funds not in alignment with previous meetings, etc. If you receive a notification that your application is denied, please contact the TechTown Strategist for further explanation.
How quickly will the grant funds be disbursed?
Once the application is approved, supporting documents are received, and the applicant has signed up for electronic payment from TechTown Detroit via the BILL network, the applicant can expect the funds to be received within 30 days of providing all the required documents.
I received a grant from another HUB. Can I still apply for a TechTown Detroit Grant?
No. Each business is only allowed by HUB grant. If an applicant has multiple businesses, they should submit a separate application for each business. However, each business can only receive one grant.
Can I use the grant funds to buy inventory or a physical asset greater than $4,999 if I can pay the difference?
No. The grant funds can only be used for physical assets or items in the inventory of $4,999 or less.
How many grants can I receive from TechTown Detroit?
You can only receive one Small Business Hub Grant from TechTown Detroit. However, you may still be eligible to receive technical assistance from other TechTown Detroit-sponsored programs.
If I received funding from TechTown Detroit in the past, am I still eligible to apply for the grant?
Yes. As long as you have not received a Small Business Support Hub Grant under SLFRP0127 you are eligible to apply.
What are examples of eligible expenses?
Purchase of equipment, inventory, software, hardware up to $4,999 per unit; highly specialized consulting services, payment of certification or licensing fees, any other cost (that is not an ineligible cost as listed below) approved by the TechTown related to supporting the business operations or growth needs of the approved applicant.
What are examples of ineligible expenses?
- Any expense that undermines efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 or that imposes conditions on participation or acceptance of the service that would undermine efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 or discourage compliance with recommendations and guidelines in CDC guidance for stopping the spread of COVID-19.
- Expenditures that violate the conflict-of-interest requirements in the federal OMB’s Uniform Guidance including any self-dealing or violation of ethics rules. Recipients must establish policies and procedures to manage potential conflicts of interest; Eligible Costs that will be or have been reimbursed by another MSF, MEDC, or federal program.
- Building-based construction costs (i.e., any activity that disturbs the ground or modifies a structure
What if I have further questions regarding eligible uses of the grant?

What if I don’t want to participate in surveys after I receive the grant funding? Will I have to return the funds at a later date?
By accepting the grant funds, you are required to participate in annual surveys received from TechTown Detroit for seven years. TechTown Detroit has the right to request the funds be returned for non-participation in reasonable data collection.
What if need more than $4,999?
Discus this with your strategist prior to submitting an application. You may qualify for other funding, but this will need to be evaluated prior to submitting the application.
Why is the minimum amount $1,500?
TechTown has other programs to assist clients with technical assistance. This grant program supports expenses that are more specialized in sustainable growth.
Can I use the grant to make structural repairs on my building?
No. Any construction-related expenses are considered ineligible.
Can I use the grant to affix structural fixtures to my building?
No. Any construction-related expenses are considered ineligible.
What if I don’t expend all my grant funds by February 1, 2026?
If you cannot expend all the grant funds by February 1, 2026, you will forfeit the unused funds and will not able to use them at a later date.
Do I have to find my own service provider,or can TechTown help?
Yes. TechTown Detroit has a network of professional services providers that they can connect you with.
Do I have to get multiple quotes?
Depending on the amount, TechTown does require multiple quotes. This ensures that you have researched your needs and providers appropriately and building the skill for successful procurement practices.
TechTown has paid a service provider directly for me in the past. Why is this grant reimbursement only?
This grant is managed differently than our technical assistance program and has been designated as a reimbursement program. If you have specific concerns regarding this process, please contact your strategist.
How long does it take to receive a reimbursement once I submit a receipt?
An applicant should assume they will receive reimbursement within 30 days of submitting a receipt. Receipts should be submitted to ttdetroit@bill.com with a copy to your assigned strategist. Please note that it relates to your HUB grant.
Can I submit more than one application for two different amounts on different dates?
No. You can only submit one application per business. If an applicant has multiple business, they should submit a separate application for each business. However, each business can only receive one grant.
What is a HUB grant and how do I know if I’ve already received a grant from another ‘HUB’?
A Small Business Support HUB grant is part of funding provided by the Small Business Support Hub Grant Program from the SBAM Foundation in partnership with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Will I need to submit a W9?
Yes. To receive a payment from TechTown Detroit, a W9 is required to be submitted in accordance with U.S Department of Treasury and Internal Revenue Service Guidelines. A link to the current W-9 form can be found here Form W-9 (Rev. March 2024) (irs.gov)
In what form will I be paid?
You will receive an electronic payment from TechTown through its procurement payment processor BILL.
Why is the maximum amount $4,999 and not $5,000?
Techtown Detroit set the maximum amount to comply with grant restrictions on thresholds of certain purchases.
