Brix Wine & Charcuterie Boutique is a sophisticated wine bar located in Detroit’s East Jefferson neighborhood. After working in New York in the marketing industry, owner Mikiah Westbrooks returned to her hometown of Detroit to embark on her journey as an entrepreneur. With the help of various Detroit support programs including TechTown’s SWOT City program, Brix officially opened in August 2017.
How does Brix play a role in Detroit’s revitalization?
Brix plays a major role in Detroit’s resurgence because we get to employ the residents of Detroit. I grew up in this neighborhood so it was extremely for me to come back to the area that raised me and provide the people here with an opportunity.
How important is it to you to be not only a woman entrepreneur, but also a woman of color?
I feel it is extremely important. Growing up, I did not see many women of color in business. Now, I have the opportunity to show the next young girl that running your own business is possible.
What has been your biggest challenge as an entrepreneur?
My biggest challenge has been fear. Starting out, I would question myself a lot. I would go back and forth about if I would start my business or not and then one day I woke up and said “I’m doing it!”
What piece of advice would you give to an aspiring entrepreneur?
Don’t give up. That is the most important thing. It took me 15 years to get to this point. There will be things that try to discourage you but you have to remember the bigger picture and do not give up.
Brix is located at 7968 Kercheval Ave, Detroit, MI 48214 and is open Thursday-Saturday.
